Abstract

Freud (1930) argued in Civilisation and Its Discontents that human suffering arises from the conflict between individual desires and the restrictions imposed by civilisation. His work, developed in a context dominated by positivism, laid the foundations for psychoanalysis as a science of the unconscious. Thinkers from the Frankfurt School later integrated his concepts with issues such as alienation and social criticism (Adorno & Horkheimer, 1944). In contemporary times, his postulates continue to be reworked from the perspective of subjectivity and social theory in order to understand current phenomena such as technology and identity. Freud's paradigmatic legacy remains relevant in the understanding of the human psyche.
